Katy Perry Facts

1.    She’s the second child of three siblings. She has an older sister and a younger brother.

2.    She grew up in a very religious family with both parents being pastors. Her father (Keith Hudson) was an ex- groupie in the 1960s and her mother (Mary Perry) divorced her first Zimbabwean husband because of a "stormy" relationship. Must say, interesting career choice indeed...

3.    Katy owns a cat, creatively named Kitty Purry.

4.    The number nine seems to be Katy’s favourite number. She began singing in the church choir, she started taking singing lessons and she enrolled at the Music Academy of the West for a while, where she studied Italian Opera - all at the age of nine!

5.    She recorded her first album at the age of 15 under Christian record label, Red Hill. Performing as Katy Hudson, she released this self-titled Christian-rock album in 2001. Sadly, because of Red Hill’s closure, this album failed before she could leave any impression.

6.    Katy says she met her boyfriend Russell Brand by throwing a bottle at him.

7.    Katy Hudson sounded too close to actress Kate Hudson, so she became Katy Perry instead, using her mother’s maiden name.
8.    She left home at the age of 17 to pursue her music career. She was signed by Island Def Jam Music Group and went to Los Angeles to work on a new album, which unfortunately never saw the light of day.

9.    In 2004 she signed with Columbia Records. She almost finished an album, but then they also dropped her...poor Katy!

10.    In 2006, she starred in Gym Class Heroes’ music video for Cupid’s Chokehold in which she played the eventual love interest of the lead singer Travis McCoy.

11.    In early 2007 Katy was signed by Capitol Music where she began recording songs for her official mainstream album One of The Boys, which was released in 2008.

12.    The album's hit single, I Kissed a Girl was released in May 2008 and peaked at number one for seven weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.

13.    Katy and Gym Class Heroes lead singer, Travis McCoy, dated on and off for several years until they split for good in 2009.

14.    Katy was still dating Travis when she recorded the video for I Kissed a Girl. Travis also has a cameo in the video.

15.    Katy has landed the role of Smurfette in the Smurfs movie, due in 2011.

16.    Fans have taken to throwing cherry Chapstick at Katy when she performs I Kissed A Girl on stage.

17.    Katy says she was not allowed to listen to secular music as a child, and got into trouble one day for singing Alanis Morissette's Ironic in the school playground.
18.    Early converts Blender Magazine named Katy as "The Next Big Thing" in October 2004.

19.    Katy is releasing her own perfume named... "Purr".

20.    She appeared as herself in a 2008 episode of The Young and the Restless.

21.    Katy nearly caused a glitter war when she tweeted that blasphemy as entertainment was "cheap" – referring to Lady Gaga's Alejandro video.

22.    She is a natural blonde.

Katy Perry The One That Got Away

  • Summer after high school when we first met
We make out in your Mustang to Radiohead
    And on my 18th Birthday
    We got matching tattoos

Used to steal your parents' liquor
    And climb to the roof
    Talk about our future
    Like we had a clue
    Never planned that one day
    I'd be losing you

    In another life
    I would be your girl
    We'd keep all our promises
    Be us against the world

    In another life
    I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
    The one that got away

I was June and you were my Johnny Cash
Never one without the other we made a pact
    Sometimes when I miss you
    I put those records on

Someone said you had your tattoo removed
Saw you downtown singing the Blues
It's time to face the music
    I'm no longer your muse

    But in another life
    I would be your girl
    We'd keep all our promises
    Be us against the world

    In another life
    I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
    The one that got away
    The o-o-o-o-o-one [x3]
    The one that got away

    [Bridge:]
All this money can't buy me a time machine (Nooooo)
It can't replace you with a million rings (Nooooo)
I shoulda told you what you meant to me (Woooooow)
'Cause now I paid the price

    In another life
    I would be your girl
    We'd keep all our promises
    Be us against the world

    In another life
    I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
    The one that got away
    The o-o-o-o-o-one [x3]

    In another life
    I would make you stay
So I don't have to say
You were the one that got away
    The one that got away

Katy Perry Hobies

Katy Perry loves shopping and hunting for antiques cuddling with her cat, hanging out with friends, and guitar/vintage shopping, dancing.... her job.

Continued Success

In 2009, Perry appeared in her own acoustic special on MTV. The soundtrack from the show, Katy Perry: MTV Unplugged, was released around the same time. That same year, Perry made tabloid headlines for her relationship with British comedian Russell Brand. The couple became engaged over the New Year's holiday while on a trip to India. On October 23, 2010, the couple married in India in a traditional Hindu ceremony. According to The Times of India, the wedding featured a procession of camels, elephants and horses, plus fire jugglers, snake charmers, dancers and musicians. Perry had previously dated Travis McCoy from the band Gym Class Heroes.

The young pop star has great ambitions for her future. "Ultimately I want Katy Perry to be as much of a household name as Madonna," she told Entertainment Weekly. Her album Teenage Dreams was released in August 2010. The single from the album, "California Gurls," quickly rose through the charts to #1 on the Billboard charts. With a signature perfume and film role opportunities heading her way, she may just make her dream come true.

Breakout Songs

Later that year, Perry released her first single, "Ur So Gay." Pop superstar Madonna became a fan of the song, calling it one of her favorites of the moment. The song drew comparisons to the likes of Lily Allen, another singer known for her quirky, cheeky lyrics. Perry said the single was inspired by the emo scene, and the "guys with guy-liner who use flatirons." Still, her career did not fully take off until the release of her next single, "I Kissed a Girl," which reached the top of the charts during the summer of 2008. With that song's success, her debut album, One of the Boys, made it into the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song also earned Perry a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Katy Perry also became famous for her theatricality. On the Warped Tour, she performed "I Kissed a Girl" with a giant tube of lip balm, referencing a line in the song. Perry has also jumped into a larger-than-life cake and appeared in a number of wild outfits while onstage. She has described her style as "Lucile Ball  meets Bob Mackie. It's about innuendo. I want everybody to get the joke, but I want them to think about it for a minute," she explained to Esquire magazine.

Early Musical Influences

As a teenager, Perry was exposed to other musical influences. One friend introduced her to the music of Queen, which remains one of her favorite groups. "I'm very inspired by Freddie Mercury and how flamboyant and theatrical he was," she told fashion magazine WWD. In high school, she strove to be her own person, choosing not to limit herself to one social group. "I was a hop-around. I hung out with the rockabilly crew, the guys who were trying to be rappers, the funny kids," she told Seventeen magazine.

Focused on her music, Perry got her GED and moved to Los Angeles to work with producer and songwriter Glen Ballard, who had worked with such artists as Christina Aguilera  and Alanis Morissette. She was only 17 years old at time, and being on her own proved tough. "It was five years of living in L.A. with no money, writing bad checks, selling my clothes to make rent, [and] borrowing money," she told Seventeen magazine. Perry also experienced a string of disappointments before getting her big break. She and Ballard were unable to find a record company willing to take them on, and her 2004 collaboration with music producers-turned-performers The Matrix was scrapped shortly before the project was to be released. After having three record deals fall apart, Perry finally signed with Capitol in 2007.

Edgy and non-typically including herself in the good girl image, Katy Perry may be one great example of the future musician. Born on October 25, 1984 in a strict Christian family, Perry was later known for her song "Ur So Gay". Her parents are two devoted pastors who directed their daughter into singing in churches or local restaurants. Perry said that her mother used to ban her from listening to what they call "secular music". Thus, young Perry was apt in gospel music until one day during a slumber party she heard the voice of Freddie Mercury.

Inspired by the Queen frontman's style of singing she was metaphorically 'opened' to another possible side of music, although it was not until much later that this side of her will come out as her main music style. At the age of 15 she moved from birth town Santa Barbara, Calif. to Nashville to work closely with songwriters. Steve Thomas and Jennifer Knapp of Red Hill Records signed her to the label to release her debut album which was self-titled while she used her name Katy Hudson. The album that contained Christian songs was released in 2001.

At 17, she met Glen Ballard ...
who is responsible for the extreme success of  Alanis Morissett ein the album "Jagged Litle Pill". Citing Morissette as one of her influences, Perry found comfort in working with Ballard who then gave her necessary mentor. In 2004 she became the vocalist of The Matrix production team and recorded some songs with Ballard that made her dubbed "The Next Big Thing" by Blender magazine. Through her sessions with Ballard, Perry was heard by Capitol Music executive, Jason Flom who then agreed to sign her in Spring 2007.

By being in the club, Perry was introduced to a number of renown musicians such as Greg Wells, Butch Walker, Dr. Luke and Max Martin. In November 2007 she offered free download of the song "Ur So Gay" on her MySpace account. It was an instant hit, but it was the second single "I Kissed a Girl" that propelled her to chart success. The latter song was used in an episode of teen drama series "Gosip Girl", thus prompting it to climb up the Billboard Hot 100 chart at #2.

Perry constantly added her live experience by scoring the opening act slots for big singers like Mika and The Starting Line Her full-length ...
